How good was NBA Street Vol. 2?
For the last 10 plus years, NBA 2K and NBA Live have dominated the basketball video game landscape with improved gameplay mechanics, realism, and graphics to try and craft the most advanced basketball games on the market. With the hype of these two series being so significant, a series that doesn’t get enough praise is the NBA Street series. The NBA street series aimed to take basketball back to the basics with a funky 90s style soundtrack and traditional 3 on 3 play for a game of 21. This series goes under the radar a lot since there hasn’t been a new game in over 10 years, yet this series, namely, NBA Street Volume 2, is considered to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest, basketball video game of all time.
Although the other NBA street games are good in their own right, NBA Street Vol. 2 is the game that left NBA Street’s mark in the history of basketball video games.
Starting off with gameplay. NBA Street Vol. 2 feels like a pure fundamental basketball game. The game speed is quick, yet fluid and cohesive. The objective is clear and simple. There’s no extra gimmicks, no VC, no excessive customization. Just pure, fun basketball. The game is split into 4 categories: Pick Up Game, NBA Challenge, Be a Legend, and Street School. Pick Up Game is similar to an instant action type mode where you just go in and hoop against a friend or the computer. NBA Challenge mode gives a set of challenges that, once completed, allow the player to unlock NBA Legends, courts, and reward points. Be a Legend is similar to myCareer in the NBA 2K series where the player makes a career and earns a variety of assets like jerseys, courts, legend characters, and trick moves without the need for buying VC or anything with actual money. Everything in the game is accessible within the game; no DLC required either. Lastly, Street School teaches players how to play the game through a series of lessons. The game feels robust even though there aren’t a crazy amount of game modes. There’s enough to unlock and grow upon that makes people want to continue playing this game. The classic atmosphere and feel of this game make up for the lack of online play since playing by yourself or with a friend is just as exhilarating.
Talking about the atmosphere. The music in this game is nothing short of iconic. I never grew up playing these games since I didn’t get into basketball until the NBA 2K era took off, but just hearing some of the music feels like I’m playing some old school basketball. The funky, old age hip hop feels fresh and more memorable than some of the music in today’s games. Not only that, but the sounds of the game were exciting and helpful in immersing the player in the game. Dr. Funk, the guy in background, helped set the tone with his reactions to dunks or shots and his hints or comments as the action unfolded. The background screams and reactions brought up the pressure when the opponent went on a run or when the game came down to the wire. It’s a more old school take on the typical NBA on TNT style commentary that the 2K games have now. This feels like a radio host watching your every dribble and shot. The Original soundtrack is something that will instantly make you think of NBA Street years later whenever you hear it. The music in the new 2K games is good, but it doesn’t capture the essence and feel that NBA Street does.
Visually, the game still holds up very well. The cartoonish look to the game helps it hold up over time and completes the feel of the game in general. The game most similar to NBA Street today is NBA Playgrounds, but there seems to be something lacking from that series. NBA Playgrounds tries to merge NBA 2K, NBA Street, and NBA Jam into one game, but it doesn’t do so in a way that makes the game memorable and worth playing for a long period of time. Stacking NBA Street Vol. 2 up to today’s games, it’s the unequivocal basketball experience. There’s no strings attached like the new NBA 2K games and it doesn’t need excessive graphics or visuals to make up for its shortcomings. This game is in contention with NBA 2K11 for the best basketball game out there. NBA Street fulfills everything anyone could want in a basketball game without doing too much at the same time. It’s stood the test of time and I just hope that future generations will get to experience the perfect basketball game in an era clogged with DLC, microtransactions, and Virtual Currency.
That’s all for this one.
