"Merry Go Round of Life", from Howl's Moving Castle and composed by Joe Hisaishi, played by the violin and piano.
The soundtracks from Studio Ghibli's films have such an immense influence that many people view "Ghibli music" as its own genre. When you listen to this piece, do you feel like walking among a sea of clouds?
I have always wanted to make a violin arrangement that brings the magic of the violin and the magic of Ghibli music together. While there already exists many violin covers of this piece, I wanted to make a virtuosic arrangement that showcases the possibilities you could achieve on the violin. To do this, I studied different classical violin pieces and concerto to better understand how to write in a "violinistic" way.
This arrangement follows a similar structure to the orchestral edition of the original piece. It starts with a short opening phrase played by the violin with double stops (0:01), followed by the introduction of the main theme played by the solo piano (0:14).

After the cadenza ends (1:13), the main theme is presented in full in the tempo of a waltz. It's worth noting that Jonathan opted to play the theme on the D string only, which makes it sound much more richer (and also much more harder to play!). The second theme then follows, played by a violin with harmonics (1:56) and gradually intensifies with the use of double stops.
The restatement of the main theme takes on the form of a much more virtuosic passage (2:35). The first half is again reminiscent of the Scherzo-Tarantelle, while in the latter half (2:52) the violin shifts to an accompaniment role using left hand pizzicatos.
The reappearance of the opening 4-bar phrase of the piece modulates to C minor (3:15). A short interlude is introduced in 6/8 time where the violin and piano plays call-and-response (3:43). The piece then returns to the second theme, played legato and largamente (with slowness and breadth) before returning to the original mood of the waltz.
After a short transition passage, the main theme returns for the final time in A minor (4:51). The piece concludes with a coda in E major.
