What started off as an attempted animal rights protest turned into an investigation revealing wrongdoings of a truck company based in Grinnell.
It began when a truck carrying hogs skidded off the shoulder of I-80 near Iowa City.
17 hogs escaped the truck along with a woman now identified as Lupita Vasquez, who fled from the scene.
Daily Iowan’s Maria Palladino has more on the story.
VO:
Lupita Vasquez is in police custody today for driving the truck without a commercial license, vehicle violation, and leaving the scene of the accident.
She made a plan with the initial truck driver to release chickens onto the University of Iowa campus to protest against the UI’s new president – Bruce Herrald, and his political affiliations.

"All animals need to be free. That's what I'm going to tell you right now. They need to be free, they need to be running loose, running all over campus. Politicians taking over and think that they can just run the country the way they want, run our state the way they want."
VO:
An investigator with the Environmental Protection Agency said the truck company, Van – WICK Freight Lines, illegally carries hogs during their official headcounts completed by the EPA.
STAND UP:
“John Anderson, the initial driver of the truck, tells us the company directs him to drive around aimlessly with extra hogs which allows farmers to have more livestock than is permitted by federal law.”
VO:
Both the EPA and the FBI are completing investigations and more information should be revealed tonight. Martin Udell, the FBI director, will hold a news conference at 5pm to reveal charges in this major federal case.
